IAI NEWS - http://iainstitute.org/news/
Happy New Year from the IA Institute!
It’s been a busy and fruitful year, and before we say "hello" to 2013, here's a look back on a number of Institute-backed initiatives and thanks to all of our volunteers:
IA Institute’s 10th Anniversary
This past November marked the 10th birthday of the IAI. And as Dad says, "Double digits! That's getting pretty serious." We’re delighted by the gift of another year to serve the IA community. We’re also deeply grateful to the men and women whose vision for the future of our community of practice led to the creation of structures and mechanisms for sustaining it.
World IA Day
Our inaugural World IA Day celebration was held on February 11, 2012 in 14 locations all over the world. We counted nearly 1600 attendees and many more at grassroots events. On February 9, 2013, we are expanding the official count to 15 cities. Registration has opened at some locations and we encourage you to consider hosting your own. Visit worldiaday.org for details.
Special thanks to the myriad volunteers who lent their time and talents to make World IA Day 2012 a success: Jessica Duverneay, Jorge Arango, Abby Covert, Joe Elmendorf, Brad Simpson, Deborah Felinger, Noreen Whysel, Dan Klyn and all of our local site coordinators.
Annual Meeting at IA Summit in Baltimore
The IA Institute Board is eager to report on the state of the organization; its vision, its finances and the goals that it is pursuing and devoting resources toward. Please join us for a presentation of the State of the IAI at the 2013 IA Summit in Baltimore in April. Exact date, time and venue will be announced soon.
Partnerships and Development
This year, the IA Institute engaged one of our founders, Bev Corwin, to serve as a volunteer Development Manager. Bev has been working hard to forge partnerships and developing a plan to extend our technical and operational capacity. We are developing relationships with the W3C's e-Books group, the XSEDE supercomputing consortium and the New York Technology Council, among others, and are maintaining relationships with current community partners including UXPA, ASIS&T and IxDA. We have renewed partnerships with AIIM and International Management Forum to provide reduced priced trainings as well as secured member discounts and comp passes to various local and regional UX and IA conferences.
We are strengthening our university involvement. For example, we have sent letters of intent to collaborate on research grants with Szeged University in Hungary and Perugia University for Foreigners in Italy. The Szeged University grant proposal is now in the second round, and the first talk at the newly opened Informatorium featured a discussion of IA and UX topics. We are committed to offering opportunities for student members to serve as ambassadors to represent the IA Institute at various events, and encourage university groups to participate through our mentoring program and grassroots World IA Day events.
The IA Institute continues to partner with related organizations and adjacent disciplines, and many of these partnerships include benefits for IAI members. These include discounted conference admission for the IA Summit, EuroIA, ASIS&T workshops, TOGAF 9 and ArchiMate Foundation workshops, Rosenfeld Media workshops, Online Information UK, User Interface Engineering 17, Follow the UX Leader, WebVisions, and many local conferences and meeting planners. Discounts from publishers Peachpit Press and Rosenfeld Media, as well as ongoing product discounts from Optimal Workshop, AIIM Online Workshops and Justinmind are other great reasons to be a member of the IA Institute. We continue to support excellent publications such as the Journal of Information Architecture, Boxes and Arrows (also celebrating their tenth year) and Johnny Holland.
Grants
The IA Institute Research Grant is a great way to get involved with developing Information Architecture thought and practice. Sally Burford won the UDS$3,000 2012-13 IA Research Grant for her proposal to study The Practice of Web Information Architecture in Small and Medium Enterprises. Look for an announcement of the research paper in February. Thanks to Jason Hobbs, Keith Instone, Kathryn La Barre, Tom Haller, and Nils Pharo for serving on the grants jury.
Recognizing Our Kind Sponsors
The IA Institute provides informative programs like World IA Day as well as member perks and programs, like the IA Progress Grant, mentoring, job board, salary survey and other occasional contests, research and promotions. Infrastructure, staffing and logistics represent a significant expenditure to ensure smooth sailing. Please keep us in mind if you would like to sponsor an activity in 2013.
We give our thanks to the following companies who generously sponsored the IA Stories Contest and World IA Day 2012:

Thank You to Our Volunteers
Last but certainly not least, we thank our Volunteers, without whom we could not provide the resources, services and community that we have today.
Our gratitude goes to Janette Shew, outgoing Translations Team Manager, whose years of service helped to make IA thought accessible throughout the world . Barbara Wiel Marin has taken on the lead translation role. Thanks to the many translators keeping this initiative alive. Thanks also to our steadfast Job Board volunteers, Marianne Sweeny and Samantha Bailey. Dorian Taylor continues leading the website reimagination, taking on persona development and customer journeys with volunteers, Silvia Di Gianfrancesco, Prabhu Singh and Jeremy Hulette. Thanks to student ambassador Gretchen Nadasky, and to the 100+ mentor volunteers, helping to provide guidance to students and practitioners worldwide. We have many, many people working to bring you World IA Day festivities and encourage all to participate. Thanks to everyone working to make World IA Day 2013 an amazing event.
Tell Us What You Need
The Information Architecture Institute is uniquely situated to connect the legacy of our community and its professional future. We’d love to hear from you: What do you need? What do you want? How can you help? How can you be helped? Understanding our collective needs is essential for continuing the work of building an organization that is relevant, rewarding and sustainable. The Institute exists to provide infrastructure and build bridges across and beyond our community. Use those assets; tell the Institute what you need that isn't there today. Let's ensure the energy and resources from the Institute are used towards the things that really matter to you.
Other great things are happening in 2013. Look for our 2012 Salary Survey results in January (Responses have been tallied and the report is nearly finished). Meanwhile enjoy these last few days of 2012.
Happy Holidays, and best wishes for 2013!

A Perfection of Means and a Confusion of Aims
by Abby Covert
"A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem" – Albert Einstein. My work involves helping people to understand how to best plan circumstances in which users are engaged and satisfied with their experience. Yet, I do not call myself a user experience designer. I am an information architect. I…

The Music Outlives the Band
by Robert Hoekman Jr
Parental advisory for strong language, guru deflating and semantics. A couple of years ago, I was asked to speak about "design thinking" at a web conference. The conference-speaking part was nothing new, but the topic certainly was. With the “design thinking” wave having just recently peaked, I had yet to even come up with…
