IAI NEWS - http://iainstitute.org/news/
Greetings From the Hurricane Zone
As I sit here safe on high ground in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, I wanted to send out my well wishes to anyone who was affected by Hurricane Sandy. I was touched to receive concerned notes from as far as Cairo (Thanks, Perihan!). My family was lucky only to be buffeted by winds and flickering wifi, while so many in our community are without power, transportation or the warmth and safety of their homes.
Please do not hesitate to reach out, if we can be of assistance to anyone who is still affected by the storm. Use the IAI-Members list if you have any requests or know of any resources that might help our extended community. If you are looking for something you can do, here are a couple volunteer opportunities I found that look interesting:

Also, if think you can make it to uptown Manhattan, I have a pot of hot tea and a plate of biscotti ready to share.
Best,
Noreen Whysel, Operations Manager

World IA Day 2013: 15 Sites Announced
Theme: Digging Into the architecture part of IA
In 2013, the Information Architecture Institute seeks to facilitate a global conversation about the architecture part of IA and to focus the 2nd annual World IA Day (@WorldIADay) on generating ideas and artifacts that allow greater understanding of what we mean when we say architecture and when we say design in our research and practice.
World IA Day 2013 - Saturday February 9th, 2013
In honor of the publication of the first edition of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web fifteen years ago, the IAI is supporting fifteen official locations for WIAD 2013. We are pleased to announce the following cities as official participants for World Information Architecture Day on Saturday February 9th, 2013.
- Ann Arbor, USA
- Bristol, UK
- Bucharest, Romania
- Budapest, Hungary
- Bogotá, Colombia
- Canberra, Australia
- Dubai, UAE
- Johannesburg, South Africa
- Milan, Italy
- New York City, USA
- Nashville, USA
- Paris, France
- Saõ Paulo, Brazil
- Tokyo, Japan
- Vancouver, Canada
Selection was—as it was in the first year—a difficult process. However, we are thrilled to announce that this year World IA Day will be held on every continent! (Antarctica notwithstanding ;)
The official website for World IA Day 2013 will be published in the coming weeks. We will be in contact with those who submitted to be an official venue in the coming days with more details.
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted to host! If your city was not selected, we at the IAI encourage you to still run an event on February 9th. Grassroots event organizers will be welcome to join in the series of webinars and conference calls used in coordinating the official events. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the executive team at the the IAI, who would be pleased to answer any questions.

Gretchen Nadasky on Semantic Technology & Business Conference
Gretchen Nadasky, MLIS Candidate at Pratt Institute School of Information and Library Science won our student contest for a free seat at the Semantic Technology & Business Conference, 15-17 October 2012 in New York City! As a student ambassador, Gretchen reported on conference sessions:
"I was thrilled to be chosen as the IA Institute student representative at the Semantic Technology & Business Conference held on October 15-17 in NYC. In my MLIS studies at Pratt Institute, I have learned about RDF triples and the promise of the semantic web. I was eager to get up to speed on the latest trends in the industry.
For me, the main take-aways were that: 1) the most intriguing applications in semantic technology are large-scale investigations; 2) users are taking a slow and steady approach to adopting the technology; and 3) there is still a great deal of controversy around the whole notion of applicability of Open Data and how semantics can help."

The ASIS&T's annual meeting in Baltimore celebrated ASIS&T's 75th anniversary. While the conference was affected by Hurricane Sandy, ASIS&T was able to extend the conference room rate for those who were unable to return home during the storm. We are hopeful that Baltimore's weather will be better at the Information Architecture Summit in April 2013. See you there!
