2011 IA Institute Annual Report Released

In 2011, the IA Institute Board of Directors developed a new framework to guide our strategy and allow us to meet the needs of an evolving membership. This framework defines a series of constituent relationships that we believe will create value and enable both the Institute and the discipline to stand out in a growing, yet still turbulent space. We are confident that all of our members, partners and others interested in our progress will find themselves and their respective needs within these relationships.

Read the 2011 Annual Report.

2012 Annual Members' Meeting Summary

The 2012 IA Institute Annual Members' Meeting was held on Saturday, 24 March in New Orleans during the IA Summit. This event is an opportunity for us to showcase achievements over the year and discuss challenges and future direction. At last year's meeting in Denver, the board presented a new framework for defining the Institute's activities, which engages membership through eight defined relationship channels.

At this year's meeting, Chris Baum presented an overview of our plan for developing a semantic web solution for the IA Institute online presence, based on research and tools developed by Dorian Taylor. World IA Day producer, Jessica Duverneay also presented on our efforts toward developing local communities with global impact through World IA Day events, the first of which were held on 11 February 2012 at 14 locations worldwide. Jason Hobbs, our Grants Chair, discussed our new research grant proposal process which you can read about below. We opened the floor for member questions and concerns which led to a lively discussion of options for our business model and revenue sources.

Our Development Manager, Bev Corwin, is assembling a team to explore alternative revenue streams through grants and affiliate programs. If you would like to help out, please send us your ideas for improving the sustainability of the IA Institute to feedback@iainstitute.org.

Boxes and Arrows Turns 10!

Boxes and Arrows website

We'd like to congratulate our partner Boxes and Arrows on turning 10 this year!

The peer-review web magazine started on March 11, 2002 with "Welcome to Boxes and Arrows" by founder/publisher Christina Wodtke. It was the first web 'zine to focus on the newly emerging practices of information architecture and interaction design for the web, and many of our favorite thought leaders started there.

In the first year, B&A published stories on such diverse topics including personas,cross-cultural design, role definition, new markets for design and interactivedesign history. Revisit that first set of  articles and you'll be surprised how many are still relevant a decade later. All-in-all, over 400 stories have been published in the magazine, written by practitioners and edited by their peers. Because it has been written by those in the trenches, it's provided practical actionable advice for anyone trying to design better.

B&A would like to thank this amazing community for its support over the years. If you would like to be involved in the next decade of the magazine, see how "you can help". You have the ideas, passion and knowledge to grow the practice; we cannot do it without you.

B&A will be sponsoring a very special retreat in august to look at the future of our profession as well the next generation of the magazine. Learn more here. If you are interested in helping make it happen, please contact retreat@boxesandarrows.com.

IA Institute Research Grant 2012/2013 - Call for Proposals

The Information Architecture Institute (IAI) is calling for research proposal submissions for its new research grant program.  This year we are offering a single, USD $3000 grant.  Deadline for application is the 15th of April 2012.

Applications should propose work that will forward the theory and practice of information architecture. This can include original research, a synthesis of existing research, the development of a new technique, method or tool, or something that could otherwise support the IA community of practice.

A successful grant project could:

  • help solve a particular problem or challenge for IA practice or theory
  • illuminate or explain an otherwise unclear or overlooked issue
  • improve an existing approach, with verified results
  • create helpful connections and syntheses between IA and one or more other disciplines

The IAI is looking for Journal-ready research papers as an output. Our aim is to use the grant to directly contribute to the body of scholarly knowledge we are creating for our community of practice and the development of the discipline.

For more information about the selection criteria and process, distribution and publication, eligibility and the award jury please visit http://iainstitute.org/en/members/grants/research_grant_details.php or contact us at grants2012@iainstitute.org.
