"Your clients live in turbulent environments: How do you help them find their way?" According to Sam Ladner and Matthew Milan, one powerful tool for strategic planning is a process called "Backcasting." Milan and Ladner have developed an agile version that can be used by IAs to work with clients to make structure and order out of the chaos. In their IA Summit Redux session on Info Architecture island, Ladner and Milan described backcasting as a tool that helps in the strategic design of shared information environments. They offered a clear set of techniques for working in a participatory and engaging fashion with stakeholders to develop backcasting scenarios. The results of backcasting include discovery, trust-building, consensus, and a range of possible end states with roadmaps to getting there.
