IAI Newsletter #1.5 May 2006
May 31, 2006 04:40 PM
The IAI Newsletter features news about IAI and our partner sites: Boxes and Arrows and IAwiki. We've also added a list of conferences, workshops, F2Fs, volunteer opportunities and job postings, so be sure to read the complete newsletter in the IAI Newsletter Archives.
Member Satisfaction Survey
The IAI Member Satisfaction Survey results are open and available to all at http://www.surveymonkey.com/DisplaySummary.asp?SID=2062591&U=206259196447.
Things that we found interesting:
- While we knew that the Discussion List and Job Board were important and valuable, the degree of importance and value for the IA Library and Tools caught us off-guard. This has become a priority for the Board.
- We are seriously reconsidering how we're approaching the Translation and Research initiatives.
We are beginning to sift through the free-text responses to understand trends in responses, but some things that are clear are:
- The Institute is valuable for networking, the job board, and the discussion list
- That local events are being given their due
- That the IAI website frustrates many people (we are working on it!)
- That the organization needs to be more transparent and communicative to its members
- That members are, by and large, satisfied with the Institute, the problems notwithstanding
We're making the results public in part so that people know how others feel, and also in case there are any enterprising souls who want to do some more rigorous analysis of the data (or make suggestions for how to structure this survey better.) If you would like to comment or volunteer, contact us at info at iainstitute.org.
Thanks to all who participated in the survey.
IDEA 2006
The IDEA 2006 (Information: Design, Experience, Access) conference has been scheduled for October 24-25 at the Seattle Public Library's Central Library.
Design problems are increasingly becoming information problems. Throughout their days, people are engaging with complex information to manage their lives. And designers now realize that information isn't simply this stuff you find -- the appropriate presentation of information helps people make sense of the world around them.
IDEA 2006 addresses issues of design for an always-on, always-connected world. Where "cyberspace" is a meaningless term because the online and offline worlds cannot be made distinct. Where physical spaces are so complex that detailed wayfinding is necessary to navigate them. Where work processes have become so involved, and so digitized, that we need new means to manage those processes.
Confirmed Speakers:
- Bruce Sterling, author, designer, visionary
- Dan Hill, BBC Radio and Music Interactive, City of Sound blog
