UX Cognitive Modeling Methods: Predicting the Success of Your User Experience Without a Line of Code

Join us for the next NYTECH User Experience Group session to learn about the fascinating methodology "Cognitive Modeling" which is rapidly finding its way into consumer UX applications. Cognitive modeling is a powerful methodology for objectively understanding how users interact with UX interfaces without writing code. It is used extensively in military and other complex interfaces, but has not found its way into consumer applications until recently.

Dr. Bonnie John, a pioneer in CM development, will talk about the applications of cognitive modeling she has employed in a wide range of interesting and relevant applications. These types of new UX design tools can dramatically reduce development time and costs and shorten time to market.

PRESENTER

Bonnie E. John, Ph.D. is a leading expert in techniques to improve the design and implementation of computer systems with respect to their usefulness and usability. She has investigated the effectiveness and usability of several HCI techniques (e.g., think-aloud usability studies, Cognitive Walkthrough, GOMS) and produced new techniques for bringing usability concerns to the design process (e.g., CPM-GOMS and software architecture evaluation for usability). Much of her work focuses on cognitive modeling, where she works within a unified theory of cognition to develop models of human performance that produce quantitative predictions of performance with less effort than prototyping and user testing. She also works on bridging the gap between HCI and software engineering, specifically including usability concerns in software architecture design.

Prior to joining IBM Research in December 2010, she was a Professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University for two decades.

MODERATOR

Charles L Mauro, CHFP is President of MauroNewMedia, a New York-based consulting firm specializing in usability engineering and user interface design, founded in 1975. Over his 35 year career, Charles has been retained by many leading corporations and startups covering a wide range of industry sectors, including financial services, consumer products, industrial systems, and military applications. He holds numerous US and international patents covering UX and product design. He has been responsible for complex UX design solutions currently running on major world markets.
