Shaping the Mobile Experience

Since 2005, the German IA Conference has established itself as a place of meeting and exchange within the concept design scene in Germany, presenting a cross section of current issues, ideas, methods and case studies from website design, information architecture, user experience design and customer experience design.

The Web has changed not only the strategies and methods of presenting and selling products and services, but also consumers' perceptions, and to a certain extent, their entire way of life, as the use of the web and social media has found its way into their professional and personal lives. In the past, a desktop or notebook computer was generally needed to browse the Web effectively; we are now witnessing the breakthrough of the mobile Web as a mass phenomenon.

The flood of mobile phones with high-resolution, multi-touch displays entering the market, together with affordable flat-rate data plans are the basis of new user experiences and new added-value niches that are becoming affordable and accessible not only for early adopters but for broad target groups. Location-based services, previously a niche application, are experiencing a breakthrough as a result of improved mobile devices.

What are the consequences of this ""revolution"" for the design of services? Which patterns in the information architecture of these services show potential? How can transparency be preserved for services that are becoming more abstract, with increasing requirements? How can barriers to entry be kept low and learning curves gentle? How can users keep track of which data are stored, where they are sent to, and for whom they are visible?

These are all questions that concept designers, information architects and user experience designers need to answer, implicitly or explicitly, as soon as they approach the challenge of designing mobile services. Moreover, aspects such as economic success, accessibility, usability, sustainability, utility and mobile privacy need to be reconciled - a balancing act.

The 2011 IA Conference in Munich will bring together concept designers and information architects seeking a constructive and collaborative exchange of ideas and a pleasant environment for networking."
